We are now beginning to plan for the 2012 North Queensland Games which will be held in the Mackay Region. Information will be posted in the next year in regards to nominating a sport to be held at the Games.
The 2008 Suncorp North Queensland Games was held in the Townsville Region on 11 to 14 April 2008.
Ranked as the largest regional multi-event sporting games in Australia, the North Queensland Sports Foundation began this biennial event in 1984.
Held in Townsville it attracted 6,400 competitors representing 42 sports. Two years later the games were held in Mount Isa and 54 sports took part. The 1988 event in Cairns had 61 sports, Mackay in 1990 had 64 sports, Townsville 1992 had 85 sports, Mount Isa 1994 had 52 sports, Cairns 1996 had 80 sports, Mackay 1998 had 42 sports, Townsville 2000 had 48, Mount Isa in 2002 had 30 sports, Cairns in 2004 had 40 sports and Mackay in 2006 had 35 sports.
The Games continue to rotate between these four centres and still attract thousands of competitors.
Competitors have been drawn mainly from North Queensland with increasing support from Queensland country, Brisbane, interstate and overseas.
Delegations from Western Australia, Victoria and the Northern Territory have visited the Suncorp North Queensland Games to gain knowledge enabling them to conduct similar events in their home states.
The Suncorp North Queensland Games is the largest regional Games in Australia. Suncorp sponsorship has continued since the inaugural event in 1984.
